How to Improve Egg Quality Naturally

What the research actually shows — and why most women are never told this

How to improve egg quality naturally is one of the most searched questions in the fertility space — and one of the most poorly answered. Most women are told that egg quality declines with age and that not much can be done about it. That is an incomplete picture. Egg quality is significantly influenced by nutrition, and nutrition is something you have direct control over.

I want to be clear about where I am coming from. I am not a doctor. I am someone who spent over a decade researching the body's ability to heal itself when given the right conditions. What I found — consistently, across credentialed researchers and clinical studies — is that the cellular environment in which eggs develop is far more responsive to nutrition than most fertility specialists communicate to their patients.

What Egg Quality Actually Means

When fertility specialists talk about egg quality, they are referring to the developmental competence of an oocyte — its ability to be fertilised, divide correctly, and result in a healthy embryo and pregnancy. Poor egg quality typically means chromosomal abnormalities, poor mitochondrial function, or both.

The mitochondria are particularly important here. Mitochondria are the energy-producing organelles inside every cell, and egg cells contain more mitochondria than virtually any other cell in the human body. The reason is that fertilisation and the early cell division that follows require enormous amounts of cellular energy. When mitochondrial function is compromised — through oxidative damage, nutrient deficiency, or both — the egg's ability to divide correctly is impaired.

This is the mechanism that connects nutrition to egg quality. It is not abstract. It is biochemistry.

Why Age Is Not the Whole Story

Age does affect egg quality — that is true and I am not dismissing it. The ovarian reserve naturally declines over time, and the rate of chromosomal errors in eggs does increase with age. This is well-established.

What is less well communicated is that age is one variable among several — and it is the variable you cannot change. The variables you can change include oxidative stress, mitochondrial function, and nutritional status. These factors directly influence the cellular environment in which your eggs develop, and they are responsive to intervention.

"The question a fertility specialist rarely asks is: what does your cellular environment actually look like? Are you getting the nutrients your body needs to support healthy follicle development? The answer, for most people, is no — not because they are eating badly, but because the nutrients are no longer in the food."

Women in their late 30s and early 40s who address nutritional deficiencies systematically can and do improve their measured egg quality. This is not anecdote — it is documented in the growing body of research on nutritional interventions in fertility. The question to ask is not just "how old are my eggs" but "what environment have my eggs been developing in?"

The Nutrients Your Follicles Actually Need

The follicle development cycle — from the point a follicle is recruited until it is ready for ovulation — takes approximately 90 days. During that 90-day window, the developing oocyte requires a specific set of nutrients to complete each stage of development correctly. Deficiency in any of these creates vulnerabilities.

CoQ10 — Mitochondrial Fuel

Coenzyme Q10 is a fat-soluble compound that sits at the heart of the mitochondrial energy production chain. Without adequate CoQ10, mitochondria cannot produce ATP efficiently. For egg cells — which are almost entirely dependent on mitochondrial energy — this means reduced developmental capacity.

Research on CoQ10 supplementation in fertility is among the strongest in the nutritional fertility field. Multiple studies have shown that CoQ10 supplementation improves ovarian response and oocyte quality, particularly in older women. A 2018 study in the Journal of Clinical Medicine found significant improvements in follicle numbers and embryo quality with CoQ10 supplementation prior to IVF.

One important note: as women age, the body's own CoQ10 production declines. For women over 35, the ubiquinol form (the pre-reduced, active form) is better absorbed and more effective than the standard ubiquinone form found in most supplements.

Selenium — Oxidative Protection

Selenium is a trace mineral that plays a critical role in protecting developing follicles from oxidative stress. It does this partly through selenoproteins — a class of antioxidant enzymes that require selenium to function. One of these, GPX4 (glutathione peroxidase 4), is specifically expressed in oocytes and is essential for protecting the egg membrane from lipid peroxidation damage.

Selenium deficiency is common. It does not appear in standard blood panels, and the selenium content of food varies dramatically depending on where it was grown — because selenium comes from the soil, and soil selenium levels vary by geography and have been declining due to modern agricultural practices.

Zinc — Follicle Development and Hormonal Signalling

Zinc is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the human body, including many that directly govern hormone synthesis and follicle development. Research has shown that zinc is essential for the final maturation stage of the oocyte — the period immediately before ovulation when the egg completes its final division. Zinc deficiency at this stage produces eggs that are chromosomally compromised.

Magnesium — The Foundation Mineral

Magnesium is required for over 300 biochemical reactions and is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body. It is involved in DNA repair, protein synthesis, and — critically — the regulation of insulin sensitivity. Magnesium deficiency is endemic in the modern population.

The 60-Mineral Problem

Beyond the headline nutrients — CoQ10, selenium, zinc, magnesium — there is a broader problem that is rarely discussed: the body requires a full spectrum of approximately 60 trace minerals to run its biochemistry correctly. Vanadium for insulin signalling. Boron for hormone metabolism. Chromium for glucose regulation. Germanium for immune function. Manganese for antioxidant enzyme production.

These minerals used to come from food — specifically from soil-grown produce. The soil, however, has been progressively stripped of minerals through modern industrial agriculture. Plants are fertilised with three macronutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) that make them grow large and look healthy, but the 60+ trace minerals that used to move from the earth through the plant into the food chain are largely absent.

This is why supplementation — with the right kind of minerals — is not optional if you are serious about fertility support. It is filling a gap that food cannot fill.

What to Remove Before You Add Anything

Most fertility nutrition advice focuses on what to add. The supplements to take, the foods to eat more of. But if the body is spending significant energy managing chronic inflammation from the wrong foods, its ability to direct that energy toward follicle development is compromised.

Before optimising your nutrient intake, remove the three biggest sources of reproductive damage:

Seed oils — canola, sunflower, soybean, corn oil. These polyunsaturated oils oxidise readily at body temperature and produce inflammatory compounds (4-HNE and malondialdehyde) that directly damage cell membranes, including egg cell membranes. Replace with extra-virgin olive oil, coconut oil, and grass-fed butter.

Refined sugar and processed carbohydrates — these drive insulin spikes that trigger a hormonal cascade suppressing ovulation. They also generate advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) that increase oxidative stress in follicular fluid. See also our article on foods that destroy fertility.

Alcohol — even moderate alcohol intake reduces mitochondrial efficiency and increases oxidative stress. During the 90-day follicle development window, alcohol is worth eliminating entirely.

The 90-Day Protocol

The 90-day timeline is not arbitrary. It aligns with the folliculogenesis cycle — the period from follicle recruitment to ovulation. The environment a follicle develops in over those 90 days determines the quality of the egg it produces.

This means the work you do today — the dietary changes, the supplementation — will show its full effect approximately 90 days from now. It also means that the habits of the last 90 days are reflected in the eggs available to you today. This is both a sobering and encouraging thought: sobering because past habits matter, encouraging because what you do from today forwards absolutely does too.

What to expect across the three months:

Days 1–30: Energy levels typically improve as inflammation reduces and nutrient status improves. Cycle regularity may begin to improve. Cravings reduce as blood sugar stabilises.

Days 31–60: Hormonal markers begin to shift. Women tracking their cycles with ovulation tests often notice more consistent LH surges. Some report reduced PMS symptoms as progesterone levels improve.

Days 61–90: The follicles developing during this period have had the full benefit of improved cellular conditions. This is when the most meaningful changes to egg quality metrics are typically measured in clinical settings.

A Note on the Right Kind of Supplements

Not all supplements are equal — and for fertility, the form of the nutrient matters enormously. Your body recognises and absorbs nutrients far more efficiently when they come in the form it was designed for — plant-derived, bioavailable, mineral-complete.
